Houston, TX School Guide

New residents to the Houston area are continually impressed by the countless educational opportunities afforded by its extensive network of public schools, private institutions, colleges, and universities.

Houston Schools

The greater metropolitan area of Houston is one of the most populated and technologically progressive regions in the country.

The city is served by seventeen school districts, each amongst the largest and most finely tuned in the nation.

The Houston Independent District, for example, is the seventh largest school district in the United States and operates over two-hundred and eighty campuses as well as magnet schools, vanguard institutions, and specialized training centers for health care, art, and various scientific disciplines.

The HISD encompasses over three-hundred square miles and supports thirteen thousand teachers serving over two-hundred thousand students!

The area also boasts a multitude of private and charter schools, many of which are fully accredited and universally recognized as educational leaders. At present, the city supports more than three-hundred such institutions and also benefits from the viewpoints and perspectives of area religious schools, independent learning centers, and community groups advocating continuing education.

Many of the schools in Houston are organized into three distinct levels, with elementary, middle grade, and senior high school students attending their own institutions.

At all levels, accountability and regulation are well established and meticulously enforced. These standards are derived directly from Texas state requirements mandating small class sizes, aptitude requirements, and the quality of public educations.

In Harris County altogether, there are twenty-four school districts serving incorporated and unincorporated areas.

For more information on these specific districts or institutions contact the Harris County Department of Education at (713) 694-6300.
