Sugar Land
Like all public schools in the state, public schools in Sugar Land are administrated by the Texas Educational Agency. Schools in Sugar Land are further placed under the authority of the Fort Bend Independent School District.
This district extends across approximately one-hundred and seventy square miles and currently employs over nine-thousand people, two thousand of which are teachers responsible for the instruction of over thirty-five thousand students across fifty-three campuses.
The lands of Sugar Land and Missouri City were consolidated just before the 1960’s, and it was at this point, in 1959, that the Fort Bend School District came into being.
The district is well known for being an exemplary place to attain an education, as it has been recognized by statewide and nationwide agencies.
In a nationwide survey, Fort Bend School District was declared one of the “top 100 School Districts in America to receive a fine arts education.”
It was similarly honored by the Texas Education Agency when seventy percent of its schools were designated as “exemplary.”
Two local high schools, Austin High School and Clements High School, were named by Texas Monthly Magazine as two of the top ten high schools in the state of Texas.
Similarly, Newsweek declared several Fort Bend institutions to be amongst the top one thousand schools in the nation.
In recent years, local competitive academic teams have achieved national championships.

Public Libraries
In addition to fine academic institutions, citizens of Fort bend are also serviced by the Fort Bend Libraries system, which consists of seven different branches, three of which exist inside the city of Sugar Land.
Sugar Land’s oldest library is the Mamie George Branch, opened in 1974, followed by the Sugar Land Branch and the First Colony Library, both opened in the 1990’s.
Wharton County Junior College
This comprehensive community college based in Wharton, Texas, has campuses throughout the Fort Bend area and is fully accredited. Founded in 1944 with two-hundred students, the school today serves nearly six-thousand and provides a broad understanding of both liberal arts and sciences in preparation for transfer to four-year baccalaureate programs.

University of Houston
This tier one research University is the flagship institution of Houston’s award-winning college system and ranks as the third largest school in Texas with nearly forty-thousand students. UH’s sprawling campus covers nearly seven-hundred acres of Southeast Houston and also supports two satellite sister schools. Founded in 1927, the University offers over three-hundred degree programs and was ranked by the Princeton Review as one of the top schools in the nation!

Rice University
William Marsh Rice University was opened in 1912 and is presently one of the top centers for learning in the country. Ranked in the top twenty five domestic universities by both The U.S. News and World Report and Forbes Magazine, the school is known for its beautiful three-hundred acre campus and palace like dorm halls.
